“The FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil – an intercultural perspective”

Webinar abstract

Amongst other sports, soccer is a discipline that brings the world together and builds bridges across cultures. The year 2014, when the World Cup was held in Brazil, was a very special event for the population of this so-called “Soccer Country” (“O país do futebol”). The expectations were very high, on the one hand regarding the enormous challenge of hosting the event, on the other hand of the Brazilian team winning their 6th trophy on the home floor. And certainly the fact that Brazil is not only the “Soccer Country”, but also that “God is Brazilian” would guarantee success, right? We know how it ended, and who won the Cup is really not so important. The interesting part, especially for interculturalists, is HOW things happened, and to observe how intercultural dimensions and leadership styles played out during this event: What is the role of the Coach, and how does hierarchy work inside the team? Individualism VS. collectivism? How do the crowd and players display their emotions? Culture shock and the challenge of adapting VS. adopting? Balancing planning and quick reaction?
The objective of this webinar is to reflect on these questions, and discuss what each of us may learn from the experience.
