Authentic intercultural relationships could not exist if the main tool of the relationship did not exist. The communication process implies knowing how to express our needs, taking into consideration the others and being able to listen to the needs others may express. Such expression of needs involves an emotion. As such, if it is positive, emotion engages dialogue; but if negative, emotion may generate conflict. Same for communication: if effective, it engages dialogue. But if ineffective, it is the origin of conflict. Communication and emotion can become sources of conflict, but if both factors are properly managed, communication and emotion can become the keys to resolving conflict. An approach to resolve conflict is called intercultural mediation.
Maria Mihaela Barbieru is a sworn translator and interpreter, intercultural mediator and foreign language trainer. She manages courses and projects of intercultural communication and mediation alongside Italian and French associations. She conducts and shares her research with some European universities. Intercultural communication and mediation is one of her core activities.

This webinar examines challenges and drivers in a transnational research team from the perspective of culturally intelligent leadership. It will demonstrate real life scenarios of how innovative approaches can be developed, when cultural perspectives are merged. The combination of various team backgrounds is shown to be a key strength in achieving the goals of the global organization.
Participants will hear how to understand and manage the most evident identifiers of these teams: cross-cultural aptitude, motivation and intercultural competency. The combination of these traits is best described as "cultural intelligence" (CQ) -- the ability to function successfully in different cultural contexts, which contributes to resolving group relationships, diversifies management approaches, and adds new dimensions to the organizational leadership.
The webinar will conclude with recommendations on how these best practices can be applied in other organizational contexts.
Boyd Johnson has earned a Ph.D. in International Studies, an M.A. in Anthropology, an M.A. in Theology, and a B.A. in Anthropology. He currently is Professor in the doctoral program in Organizational Leadership at Indiana Wesleyan University, where he has taught for over 19 years. Prior to that, he worked for World Vision International for 16 years in many roles, based in Australia and Asia. Dr. Johnson has done training, consulting and teaching in over 50 countries, has visited over 80 nations on six continents, and has lived in six countries. He is a dual citizen of Canada and the USA. There is no doubt that religious freedom is widely threatened in numerous Muslim states. A portion of the world's most quelled religious minorities include Egypt’s Christian Coptic minority; the Baha’i in Iran; the Ahmadis in Pakistan; Muslims in Myanmar and so on.(1) In these places, religious repression has been a ubiquitous fact of life for years, irrespective of a person’s credo. However, religious repression is not restricted to Muslim governments only. The current wave of enforcing prohibitions which include the building of mosques with minarets, wearing head scarves or Burqa and displaying religious symbols in public offices and schools,(2) represents another facet of the repression of religious expression in the name of freedom in Europe. The current restrictions by political-legal-social actors in Europe leaves a big question mark while most human rights Conventions do not allow governments to impose limitations on the freedom of expression and religion.(3) The webinar will reveal the similar pattern in European governments and Muslim governments to deter the liberty of expression and religion, the impact these laws have and how they do nothing but intensify religious intolerance amongst inter-communities. Finally, it concludes that equality and justice at every level and Love for All and Hatred for None is the only key to peace in this world.

Relativism, especially cultural relativism, has been the core philosophy of intercultural work from the beginning. As a counter to the then-prevailing idea that “our" (whoever said so) society was the absolute acme of civilization, relativism was the far saner view that different societies represented different kinds of civilization. Societies could not be compared to an absolute standard of civilization, since “everything exists in context.” Judgments could not be made according to absolute values, since cultures were “not bad or good — just different.” Unfortunately, the extension of relativism and suppression of absolutism has created a catastrophe: relativism is becoming absolute. Now we hear racists saying, “you have to accept my views in context.” We hear fascists saying, “You can’t judge me — I am of a different identity group.” We hear dishonest politicians rejecting revelations of their lying as “fake news.” In other words, relativism has been highjacked by the people it was meant to counteract. This seminar will explore some of the paradigmatic history of the rise and demise of relativism as it affects intercultural work. It will suggest some ways that the emerging paradigm of constructivism is reframing relativism and creating new kinds of multicultural solutions.
Dr. Milton J. Bennett founded and directs the Intercultural Development Research Institute located in Portland, Oregon and Milano, Italy. He was a tenured professor at Portland State University is now an adjunct professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca, where he teaches intercultural communication in the graduate program of Social Service Management and Political Policy. In the corporate sector, Dr. Bennett has been on the executive training faculty of Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, Smith College, Boeing Leadership Center, Motorola University, the Stockholm School of Economics, and Eni University, and he currently is associated with the Global Leadership Program of Mesa Research Group. His recent text is Basic Concepts of Intercultural Communication: Paradigms, Principles, & Practices, and he is well-known for the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity that has been used to guide training and research in the field since 1986.

This webinar will present an approach to intercultural interaction based on the concept of diversity competence and on the TOPOI model. TOPOI has been widely used in Dutch higher education, mainly aimed at healthcare and social work in multi-ethnic society. Partly as a response to requests from the sectors of international business and communication, a new and completely revised English book based on TOPOI with a broader and international focus will be published early 2018. An inclusive, communicative approach is proposed to intercultural interactions as primarily interpersonal encounters. The acknowledgement of people’s multiple identities and the view of people as not only products, but also producers of culture is crucial for this approach. TOPOI serves as a communicative tool to analyze unfamilarity and miscommunication that may occur and provides suggestions for intervention. Target group: especially trainers and lecturers, all levels but most useful for intermediate and advanced interculturalists.
Arjan Verdooren, Msc. is co-author of Diversity Competence-Cultures Don’t Meet, People Do (together with Edwin Hoffman PhD, who originally developed the TOPOI model). Arjan has worked for the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam – the oldest provider of intercultural training in The Netherlands – for over twelve years and is still associated with KIT as he divides his time between Amsterdam and Gothenburg.

|Topic:||How psychological contracts work, and how they can influence the success or failure of international assignments more...
When researching the causes for assignment failure, most look at the “causes” during the assignment, or mistakes of the organization/expatriate before/after the return. However, what if the wrong candidate was selected, and failure was inevitable? What if the organization made promises before the assignment, and was not able to hold them after return. How does preparation before the assignment factor into the return? How do psychological contracts factor into assignments?
This webinar will look at how psychological contracts work, and how they influence assignments. This can help intercultural trainers and consultants to identify possible contract violations that their expatriate clients or their organizations are experiencing.
(This webinar is intended for all levels, and is based on the material presented at the SIETAR EU congress in Dublin.)
Dr. Michelle J. Cummings-Koether works in Germany as an intercultural consultant and lecturer. Having grown up in the United States, she now consults companies in the D/A/CH region on various topics relating to management and intercultural communication. As a lecturer, she teaches intercultural/ international management, and intercultural competence.
