This webinar will introduce an innovative blended approach to modern intercultural learning, underpinned by a three-step flipped-classroom methodology designed to maximize the transfer of learning to the workplace.

3Q 2019

UBrinkmann 2019 Date and Time: Tuesday, July 16th 2019, 18:00-19:00 CET
Speaker: Ursula Brinkmann
Topic: From Clashes to Creativity: TEAM READINESS for (Culturally) Diverse Teams more...

Research shows that the worst and the best teams have one thing in common: the diversity of backgrounds of their members. Diverse teams have more clashes and conflicts than less diverse teams, and so often fail to perform. However, diverse teams can also outperform less diverse teams in being more creative and innovative. This webinar invites you to join us on the journey from clashes to creativity, and to learn more about how we support (culturally) diverse teams to make this move. TEAM READINESS captures all the latest insights on what gets diverse teams into performance mode. TEAM READINESS introduces a learning process that is designed to get diverse teams ready to outperform other teams, integrating confidential personal feedback on competences with team development.

Ursula Brinkmann, PhD, is co-founder of Intercultural Business Improvement. With Oscar van Weerdenburg, she developed the Intercultural Readiness Check to assess intercultural competences. In 2014, they published Intercultural Readiness: Four competences for working across cultures (Palgrave). Ursula was president of SIETAR NL from 2015-17 and received the Margaret D Pusch Founder Award in 2016.

MBarbieru 2019 Date and Time: Tuesday, September 17th 2019, 18:00-19:00 CET
Speaker: Maria Mihaela Barbieru
Topic: Communication and Emotion in Intercultural Mediation more...

Authentic intercultural relationships could not exist if the main tool of the relationship did not exist. The communication process implies knowing how to express our needs, taking into consideration the others and being able to listen to the needs others may express. Such expression of needs involves an emotion. As such, if it is positive, emotion engages dialogue; but if negative, emotion may generate conflict. Same for communication: if effective, it engages dialogue. But if ineffective, it is the origin of conflict. Communication and emotion can become sources of conflict, but if both factors are properly managed, communication and emotion can become the keys to resolving conflict. An approach to resolve conflict is called intercultural mediation.

Maria Mihaela Barbieru is a sworn translator and interpreter, intercultural mediator and foreign language trainer. She manages courses and projects of intercultural communication and mediation alongside Italian and French associations. She conducts and shares her research with some European universities. Intercultural communication and mediation is one of her core activities.
